At the east end of the village of Great Strickland. |
| Description: |
Great Strickland had no church of its own until 1870 because it was originally a staunch Quaker village – in 1655 it was said to be Quakerism’s most important stronghold in Westmorland. The present church was built in 1870 on an elevated site at the east end of the village as a chapel-of –ease to the mother church at Little Strickland. The church was built from fine local limestone in random walling and is now a Grade II listed building. It has a spiral turret containing one bell. St Barnabas has been described as “ a good example of a sensitively designed Victorian rural church built on a low budget, displaying careful use of materials. Much use is made of accentuating features with minimum detailing” (Department of National Heritage). Over the years the hard work, dedication and generosity of local people have contributed to the church’s furnishings. The church in Great Strickland offers a warm welcome to all – to share in its worship or enjoy a moment of tranquillity and reflection within its walls. |
