Appleby St Lawrence

Location: Appleby town centre, through the cloisters at the foot of the Market Place.
Description: A grade I listed building, of late 12th century foundation, rebuilt late 13th after a raid by the Scots, restored 16th by Lady Anne Clifford, plus 2 rounds of 19th century internal remodelling. Noted for the organ, probably of 1661 origin (from Carlisle Cathedral), and the tombs of Lady Anne and her mother Lady Margaret. Featured in Simon Jenkins' 'A Thousand Best Churches' .

Appleby St Lawrence

Appleby St Michael

Location: B6542 east-bound from Appleby Bridge. In the dip beyond the first hill, on RHS opposite the Royal Oak Inn.
Description: On the older of the two church sites in Appleby, the red sandstone building contains only fragments of the earlier Saxon building. St Michael, Bongate was declared redundant 30 years ago, when it was converted to a private house and artist's studio. Not normally open to the public

Location: Midway between Hilton and Murton, on the L coming from Appleby.
Description: Simple fellside church, opened 1855 at the height of the lead mining boom in the area. Noted for its 3-decker pulpit
