Tebay St James

Location: GR NY616 044 200 yards behind main village street
Description: S.James' is a 'railway church', built in 1880 with locally raised funds, but on land given by the railway company, as a place of worship for the railwaymen and their families. While the exterior is of local stone and slate, the interior is faced with brick in cream and crimson, the colours of the railway that marked stations and buildings all along the line. Inside the pulpit is of Shap granite, as is the font, which stands in a great semi-circular apse at the west end, with a unique circular sacristy underneath it and a distinctive circular bell tower next door.
