| Description: |
The present church has stood since 1744 on the site of the church of a medieval priory, the ruins of whose other buildings lie unearthed immediately N in the churchyard.
This priory housed canons of the Gilbertine order, founded by S.Gilbert of Sempringham in the 12th century as he only English medieval religious order with both men and women.
Our foundation, along with all the others, was dissolved by King Henry VIII in 1538. Thereafter the church slowly decayed until the rebuilding of 1744. Some medieval carved stonework and tombstones remain in the church, but its most striking interior features are the 18th century box pews, arranged facing each other in monastic fashion, and the huge 3-decker pulpit. |
