| Location: |
In the centre of Caldbeck Village, between the Post Office and the shops at Priests Mill. |
| Description: |
Although best known for the grave in its churchyard of the huntsman John Peele, Caldbeck may well have had a place of Christian worship on this site since St Kentigern (also affectionately known as St Mungo) evangelised the area around 553 AD. However, the present building began with a stone structure in Norman times, part of which can still be seen in the wall on the north of the chancel, with its small 'leper window' and in the archway of the porch. The North aisle was built around 1400 and the church further expanded in 1520, with the tower, with three bells, added in 1727. St Kentigern's well is located beside the small packhorse bridge just to the north west of the building. |
