Castle Sowerby St Kentigern

Location: In an isolated and beautiful spot about three miles from the village of Millhouse: as the road climbs from Millhouse towards the Penrith Road, you will see a sign directing you to turn right to Castle Sowerby Church.
Description: This ancient parish church, with its scenic backdrop of the Northern Fells, is set in sparsely populated countryside, off the beaten track. Yet it may have been the presence of several well used roads that caused St Kentigern to stop and preach and baptise here on his missionary journey through Cumbria, hundreds of years before the present church was built. In the 12th century, this building, dedicated to St Kentigern, was a Norman structure consisting only of a nave and chancel. It was lengthened at both ends in the 13th century and further enlarged in the 16th century when a more substantial belfry was added for the two bells. Well known for its atmospheric service of Carols by Candlelight, other special services mark the seasons in this parish.
2nd Sunday: Holy Communion
