Aldingham Church hugs the Cumbrian side of Morecambe Bay and is open to the wild beauty of the Bay area. It is an idyllic location 3 miles along the ‘Coast Road’ from Ulverston just beyond the villages of Baycliffe and Scales, and attracts many visitors walking the coast or looking for a quiet, unspoilt beach. A haven of peace for folk from Barrow. The rural parish takes in Newbiggin and Roosebeck. |

The Church is largely of Norman origin (12th century) but a worn Anglo-Saxon cross fragment in the east wall and some evidence of Viking burials suggests a much older sacred site. It was extended substantially during the time of Revd. John Stonnard, friend to Queen Victoria; unfortunately his ‘extensions’ caused much of the earlier parts to be lost to us. Like many of our churches Aldingham reveals different generations and their attention through its visual architectural history. It is currently facing the need for substantial restoration work to fabric seriously eroded by the weather over the years. See the website for history and more pictures. |
