| Location: |
3 miles NNW of Penrith. Use junction 40 or 41 off the M6 |
| Description: |
The church building is mainly thirteenth century, though the chancel was rebuilt in 1876. The nave aisles are divided from the nave by three arches with supporting piers. Those on the north side lean considerably, but have been in this state for centuries and show no signs of further movement. The church has 3 ancient piscinae and an ancient font, but almost no stained glass. There is a small bell cot with 2 bells, one of which is thought to have come from Shap Abbey.
It is not known to which St John the church is dedicated or when it became a Parish Church from being merely a "Chapel in the Forest of Inglewood". It became part of the Benefice of Penrith in 1956. The Parish comprises Catterlen, Newton Reigny and Newton Rigg College (now part of the University of Cumbria). The church is always open. Churchwardens and PCC members live next door. |
