Kirkland St Lawrence

Location: Details to follow
Description: This fine old church is said to have been much larger in medieval times when the parish included Skirwith and Culgaith. The living was rectorial until the reign of Henry VI when it was granted to the prior and convent of St Mary, Carlisle. The building is part late thirteenth century, or early fourteenth, but there was a rebuilding and restoration in 1768 and another in 1880. There is a pointed trefoiled piscina to be seen and an effigy of a knight that Pevsner thought to date from the thirteenth century. In the churchyard is a cross standing over eight feet high.
