| Description: |
St James' Church was consecrated in 1867. It was designed by Travis of Manchester, and built at a cost of £1,300. Previously parishioners had to travel the two and a half miles to Aspatria for church services. The church is spacious and well-maintained with an attractive wrought-iron screen and some fine windows. The pipe organ was installed as a war memorial.
The parish of Hayton includes Hayton itself, Prospect, Oughterside, Allerby, and a short stretch of the Solway Coast at Mealo, as well as outlying farms. In addition to Sunday worship, regular social events are held, and there is an active PCC. Church members from all three parishes of the Benefice join together for some activities, such as meetings of the Mothers' Union and study groups. The church also has strong links with the local primary school, Oughterside School. Further information from the Churchwarden, Mrs Fiona Buchanan 016973 21331, or from the Vicar. |
