| Location: |
St Mary's Church stands on a slight rise above a green at the north-east end of the village, just behind the former school, now used as the village hall. Gilcrux is approximately 5 miles north of Cockermouth and 4 miles south-west of Aspatria. It is signposted from several points on the A596, and from the A595 it can be reached via Plumbland and Parsonby, or via Bridekirk and Tallentire. |
| Description: |
The small stone-built church is thought to date from around 1100, and has inside a round and narrow chancel arch, whilst the south aisle is separated from the nave by a two-arched arcade built about a century later. The windows have been enlarged over the centuries and the pews and other woodwork date from the late nineteenth century.
Information about access to the church, service times, and other special activities, can be found on the church notice board, or by contacting the churchwarden, Mrs Virginia Shiach, 016973 21600
For a trial period of six months beginning in February 2007, there will be informal All-Age Worship at 9.30am on the second Sunday of each month. The PCC hopes that this will become a regular feature of the life of the church. For further details please contact Mrs Shiach or the Vicar.
