| Location: |
The southernmost of three Anglican Parishes in Workington. Situated off Mossbay Road, at the bottom of the hill that joins Mossbay Village to Westfield. Serving the areas of Frostoms, Mossbay, Westfield and Moorclose. |
| Description: |
Originally built as a Mission Hall in 1887 as outreach into that part of St. John’s Parish which housed the growing numbers of Coal Mine and Steel Works families drawn to the area for work. Strong bonds were built with the local industry as employees and their families benefitted from the worship and social life which revolved around the Mission. The population grew and the early 1950’s saw a move to make the area a parish in its own right. In 1958 the Parish of Westfield, St. Mary was created. The Parish Worship and community activity was moved to a new Parish Hall whilst the Mission Hall was reordered to become the Parish Church. This meant the church building being extended to include St. Cuthbert’s Chapel, the sanctuary being converted into the baptistery, and the opposite gable wall being knocked through to house the choir, organ, Choir and meeting room, vestry, and the new sanctuary. The result, a beautiful, cared for and loved, prayerful and welcoming church all housed within a light and airy, elliptical arched and clean lined “modern” style. A style that includes many features of its bond to local industry – the bricks for the new build being donated by the Steel Works; the base of the alter rail of the Lady Chapel a section of railway line; detail in the floor being a cross-cut of railway line polished to make crosses, and brass from the foundary centering the crosses of the central aisle; a miners lamp lighting the way to the tabernacle and aumbrey; and extruded aluminium rod from the aluminium works an integral part of the rood arch, alter rails and candle sticks.
The Church community look outwards to serve the wider community of the Parish. Today there is a modern Community Hall and Lisa’s Room joining the church building to the Parish Hall, and beyond that a secure garden and Youth Wing. Many activities keeping the bond of Church and Community alive and well take place, especially important as the decline of the industrial base, and need, increases.
A friendly, prayerful, community of saints in a multiple deprivation area, with a joyful modern catholic tradition prepared to experiment to make the road straight for those searching for spirituality and the knowledge and love of Christ |
