| Location: |
Holy Trinity, the Parish Church of the Langdales, stands on the hill overlooking the village of Chapel Stile. It is to the right off the B5343 and three narrow lanes lead up the hill. Parking is very limited but out of school hours you may park in the school playground which is on the left-hand side of the road as you leave the centre of the village |
| Description: |
The present church was built in 1857, but there has been a place of worship on the site since the 1570s. The style is decorated Gothic, and the church is built of local slatestone. Several interesting features include fine carving on the reredos and pulpit, stained glass windows, six bells, a clock and the Langdale Tapestry - which is not a tapestry!
The glass includes the St Francis widow designed and made in the Langdale studio of Mr & Mrs Walmsley. The bells are rung every Sunday and practice night is Wednesday, 6pm - 7pm; visitors are welcome and do come from far and near.
The clock is a flat-bed turret clock, similar in design to Big Ben, and was made by James Harrison of Hull.
The Tapestry was made to celebrate the Millennium and consists of 8 panels; it was worked by 40 people and the local school children. It tells the story of the Langdale valleys from their volcanic origins through the ice ages to the present day.
We warmly welcome visitors and children - and many do join us! |
