Windermere St Martin

Location: St Martin's parish church is situated on Lake Road in the heart of the attractive bustling town of Bowness on Windermere, 50 metres from the shores of lake Windermere.
Description: There has been a church on the present site of St Martin's since 1203, when it was originally a chapel under Kendal. The earlier church was destroyed by fire in 1480, and the current building dates from 1483. One of the most striking features about the church building are the decorative murals, the sixteenth century instructive 'sayings' and quotations from the Bible on the walls and roof beams. The greatest treasure of St Martin's is the East Window which contains fine stained glass, most of which dates from the 15th century, although part of the Window is believed to date from 1260 (making it amongst some of the oldest stained glass in Britain). The history of the window is obscure, but it is thought that the glass originally came from Cartmel Priory. St Martin's has recently undergone modernisation and improvements including the installation of the Curwen Screen in 2000, a magnificent etched glass panel depicting angels glorifying God. St Martin's is a vibrant living, working church community. Children's groups meet during our 10.00am Sunday services, and we have an excellent play area for babies and toddlers. There are also several home groups that meet regularly, plus men's and women's fellowship groups, prayer groups, and a youth club for younger church members, and we run Alpha courses on a regular basis. Whether you are a visitor to the Lakes or new to the area you are always assured of a warm welcome at St Martin's.
