Non-Stipendiary Ministry

Overview

Non Stipendiary Ministers (NSMs) are sometimes called Ministers in Secular Employment (MSE).

Essentially, NSMs are people who are ordained, and offer some time to the Church, but do not receive a stipend. (Clergy do not receive a salary - ie they are not paid for work done; they receive a stipend - money to enable them to live without having to earn, so that they are free to do the work to which they are called.)

NSMs earn the money they need in a wide variety of employment, and part of their ministry, their work for God, is in their normal workplace.

David's role is to have a watching brief for non-stipendiary ministry (NSM). This will involve working with the Archdeaconry NSM Coordinators to support non-stipendiary ministers in the diocese and keeping up with developments about NSM in the wider church.

David Simon has served as a non-stipendiary minister since his ordination in 1987. Until 1998 his ministry was work focused when he lectured in Accountancy and Finance at the University of Humberside. David has spent three years as Administrator and Assistant Warden at Rydal Hall before retiring to Grange over Sands where he is licensed to the Cartmel Peninsula Team Ministry.
