Urban Theology Collective

The annual gathereing of urban theologians and practitioners will continue to reflect on their urban experience as they attempt to forge a distinctive urban theology. The cocnvenor for the week is John Vincent. Those activly involved in urban life are invited to join.

After John - The Fourth Gospel in Art & LiteratureMichael Wheeler's interest is in the cultural impact of John's gospel, especially the way it has been represented in art and literature, before, during and after the nineteenth century.

Reading In The Age of Gladstone

Reading In The Age of Gladstone - As part of the Gladstone bicentenary and at the conclusion of a three-year project at the library this conference explores the issues that surround reading in the period c1830 - 1901.

Poetry and Film
Friday 6th - Sunday 8th February 2009
Poetry and Film - A Creative Arts Retreat Movement (CARM) retreat led by the poet and spiritual writer Brenda Lealman with Charmion Mann as Chaplain. Participants will watch films and read poetry together, share their responses and be encouraged to write their own poetry.
Cost: £150 (all inclusive - course fee, food and accommodation).
Dancing with Death, Laughing with Life
Monday 30th March - Friday 3rd April 2009
Dancing with Death, Laughing with Life - This will be John Shelby Spong's final visit to St Deiniol's Library to lecture. He will reflect on death and the afterlife. This is the last opportunity to spend a week with one of the most controversial contemporary church figures and one of the most erudite exponents of scripture.

Film and Theology Weekend

Film and Theology Weekend - The eleventh annual weekend of screenings, lectures, discussions, cuts and clippings. As usual, the participants will explore the relationship between film and religion, theology and the Bible.

Lying and Cheating - The Jacob and Joseph storiesLyn Bechtel continues her acclaimed series of courses on the Hebrew Bible. This year she looks at the surprising stories of Jacob and Joseph - stories that push the audience to question some of their traditional theological assumptions.

Art and Human Dignity
Friday 12th - Sunday 14th June 2009
Art and Human Dignity - John Blackwell's course will explore the wonders of human dignity through art and film. We will discuss two books on art: Art and Physics by Leonard Shlain, What's Bred in the Bone by Robertson Davies. Peter Francis will introduce some contemporary films that explore the theme.
The goal is to come away with a clearer understanding of what we mean by human dignity, with a consciousness that helps us better to pursue justice for all.

The Gladstone Conference

The Gladstone Conference - The Centre for Victorian Studies at University of Chester, in association with St Deiniol's Library, will host an international conference to mark the bicentenary of the birth of William Ewart Gladstone.

Celtic Pilgrimage - Through lectures and visits to sites in North Wales, Donald Allchin, Ian Bradley, Jennifer Foster and Jane Cartwright explore Celtic history, literature and religion and trace Celtic influences on contemporary faith and practice.

Greek in A Week

Greek in A Week - A course for those wishing to learn New Testament Greek and those wishing to revise and improve their knowledge of it. No prior knowledge of Greek is assumed - all we ask is that you try to learn the Greek alphabet before you arrive. The week is led by New Testament scholar, Kalyan Dey.

Hebrew in A Week - This course offers an exciting way to enjoy and understand Biblical Hebrew. Lyn Bechtel leads the week for those who wish to begin to read Biblical Hebrew.
