Partnership in World Mission

Partnership for World Mission

Partnership for World Mission (PWM) was formed from the former Partnership in Mission. In the late 1970's members of General Synod were asked to encourage their dioceses to support and promote the World Mission of the Church. The PWM Committee meets four times a year under the chairmanship of our Diocesan Bishop and has representatives from four Mission Agencies, two Development Agencies, four Partnership Groups as well as Diocesan Synod. It also has responsibility for the Annual Bishop's Harvest for the Hungry Appeal.

We are the church - the family of God, created by God for His purpose. The church exists for and by Mission. The New Testament church knew that it had been created for Mission. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, a praying, worshipful, obedient community were sent into the world to teach, tell, share God's love to all. We are accountable to one another and to God.

Through PWM, with the help of Mission Agencies (SAMS, Crosslinks, USPG, CMS), Christian Aid, World Development Officer and our Partnership links the Lord enables us to remove the blinkers and see possibly for the first time, the greater picture of humanity. We are very fortunate in this diocese having two Bishops who not only understand much about World Mission but who are also both very supportive of the work undertaken.

Mission Agencies & their worth - support them or lose them. They are a wonderful source of experience and knowledge. Contact names and numbers can be found in the Carlisle Diocesan Directory - ask your incumbent for details. My details are also there.

A PWM Strategy for Mission paper is available and leaflets will soon be available.

Partnership Links with Carlisle

Madras - Conveners - The Revd's Jim & Katie Hyslop. Over the years the partnership has enjoyed visits by lay members (including young people) and clergy, exchanges of clergy. As well as supporting the tsunami appeal in 2005 we have for the past three years co-supported places at the Northwick Girls Hostel.

Stavanger - Convener - The Reverend Canon David Fowler. There have been visits and exchanges by individuals and small groups. In October 2003 our Rural Deans and Lay Chairs spent a weekend experiencing the similarities and differences between our two dioceses. This visit was reciprocated in 2004 when senior cathedral staff visited Carlisle. Both Cathedral choirs have exchanged visits.

Zululand - Convener - Mrs Jill Smith. Visits of laity and clergy have taken place. There has also been a clergy placement, a priest from Zululand and his family spent 9 months in the diocese of Carlisle. A Lent Appeal raised much needed funds towards a Rectory in Manguzi. Our Cathedral congregation have supported projects at St Augustine's school.

Northern Argentina - Convener - Mr David Holt. Following the establishment of this link in 1995 we have supported Youth Workers, Ordinand Training and Soup Kitchens. The beautiful SIWOK Wooden Crafts can be bought from the Resources Centre, they are also available on a 'sale or return' basis. Why not sell some at your next Fayre or fundraiser? Many visits have also taken place by both laity and clergy.
