Originally erected in 1744, Christ Church was rebuilt in its present form in 1845, enlarged in 1849, and restored in 1885. The building is of a cruciform shape, and is constructed of hammered red sandstone; it is a Grade II listed building.

This Grade I listed building stands on one of the earliest Christian sites in Cumbria. The present church, built around 1130, is a small stone building in Norman and Early English styles. The south aisle was added in the 13th century.
