The rebuilding of 1890 has given us the church we see today. Parts of the building go back to the late twelfth century though everything above the height of about three feet was lost in the restoration of 1749.

For at least 650 years there has been a church in Wreay, but in 1840 it was in a state of disrepair. The St Mary's that we see today was built between 1840 and 1842 under the personal direction of Sarah Losh. The form of the church is based on a Roman basilica that Sarah had seen during her 'Grand Tour' of the continent in 1817.
