Egremont
Church Street Egremont

We offer a public expression of Christian faith in the midst of our communities, based on a heritage from generations of worship and service.  We want to be (and need to be) a sustainable and growing expression of Christian faith for the 21st century.  Thus far the written expression of our mission is to develop our church life in a community context and we have adopted the motto of:

“a church for the town and a town for the church”

Our style of worship is broadly identifiable as central / liberal catholic.  Services are Eucharistic, based around Common Worship Order I in modern or traditional language, follow the liturgical calendar, and vestments are worn. We have a robed choir. Lay participation in services includes reading lessons, taking the offertory, administering the chalice, leading intercessions and prayers for healing after the Eucharist on the third Sunday.

Our church building is a large sandstone church, dedicated to Saints Mary and Michael, which was consecrated in 1882.  The seating capacity is around 450.  There are a number of notable interior features: the decorated chancel roof, the rose window and the reredos.  The organ was rebuilt in 1994 and a digital organ installed in parallel to the pipe organ.  Additional stops and a sound distribution system were added. The church tower houses a peal of eight bells which are rung regularly for Sunday services, occasionally for weddings and by teams of visiting ringers.  The tower also houses a relay transmitter for a mobile phone company ‘EE’. We have an adjacent modern hall with a range of facilities and it is widely used by the community as well as by the church.
