Matterdale
Matterdale Church is situated on the A5901 between Matterdale End and Dockray.

The parish is in a broad valley west of Ullswater, surrounded by high fells and consists of scattered farms and houses, with two small hamlets. The simple fell-side Church is loved by the community and visitors alike. Many of our residents do not attend Church every Sunday but support the Church in many ways. A warm welcome is offered to all.

The church is set in a splendidly quiet corner of Matterdale and the view from the church door must be one of the best in Lakeland. In 1566 Bishop Best granted permission for the inhabitants to build themselves a church. The simple building has changed over the centuries. The building will seat up to 90 people. It contains the original font, probably 17th century, and the Greystoke font, probably Norman, given to Matterdale in 1705.It contains some fine oak furnishings, including the 17th century Communion rails, a two decker pulpit and the Parish Clerk's seat. The small tower was built in 1848 and at the same time the thatched roof was replaced by a slate roof. The original graveyard was closed in 1935 and is the responsibility of Eden District Council. The new graveyard is about 50 yards away. The church has a  pipe organ with a regular organist. The hymnbook used is Anglican Hymns Old and New. Services are held alternate Sundays- usually Holy Communion. The usual congregation is 20 to 30, but more for special services. The church is always open.
