Armathwaite Christ & St MaryChurch SIF Form »

Armathwaite
The church building is to be found near the centre of the village, adjacent to the Old School Hall, which has a distinctive blue clock with gold characters (the church notice board matches the clock face precisely).

After six centuries of Christian witness, the church still forms the spiritual heart of the community. An annual Harvest Supper, an event free to all with food provided by the congregation, takes place in the Old School Hall, adjacent to the church, to which the entire community is invited. An ecumenical Christmas Carol Concert, based around the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, is also held in the Old School Hall, attracting an enthusiastic congregation of carol singers and willing volunteers who read from both Christmas poetry as well as scripture. The church is also a collecting point for contributions to the Carlisle Food Bank.

Chapel. Early seventeenth century with early twentieth century restoration. Large blocks of dressed red sandstone, under graduated sandstone slate roof with coped gables and cross finials. Three bay continuous nave and chancel, with west open bellcote.

One of the original parishes in the Diocese. The present simple building principally dates from 1714 with very considerable alterations from the second half of the nineteenth century which in some respects anticipate the Arts and Crafts style.

A warm welcome awaits visitors, young and old, to our simple village church. Refreshments are served after our Sunday services. Families are very welcome.More information can be found on our website below.

The Parish was formed in 1868 when Christ Church was built at the sole cost of the Reverend Arthur Emilius Hulton who came from a wealthy Southampton family.

The church was designed by RJ Withers and comprises Nave, Chancel, South Porch and Vestry. The East and West windows are by O’Connor of London and depict The Last Supper and the four Evangelists and four major Prophets. Other windows showing floral and fruit designs are by Powell of Whitefriars.

The oak reredos has three elaborately carved panels along with six illuminated metal panels depicting the Ten Commandments. These latter are the work of Creighton & Scott of Carlisle.

An attractive Millennium Tapestry worked by parishioners and others in 2000 shows a variety of parish scenes.

At the foot of the churchyard is a Peace Garden, opened by the Bishop of Carlisle in 2011, which includes an obelisk surmounted by a dove symbol adapted into a sun-dial.  The sculptor was B Cowper of Catterlen.
