The first view from the roadway is of a simple, single cell chapel with a bell tower set well back. However, from behind and above, it presents quite a different image, very much reminiscent of exotic middle or eastern European churches with their clusters of octagonal additions. We do not know who designed the tower and baptistery, so it is not possible to trace the inspiration for this exotic treatment, but it seems to be totally out-with the usual ecclesiastical architectural traditions of the region. The timber carved panels and door frame of the 1880s, display a design and an ambitious skill in execution and topic which is unique to this church and they are worthy of further research. As is the dinky little font, whose origin is a fascinating mystery – it was presented to the church by the incumbent in the 1840s but no mention is made of where it came from. Did it have any relationship with the early Setmurthy Chapel first mentioned in 1225 and rebuilt in 1794 or was it lifted from somewhere else? Church has strong associations with the Fishers of Higham Hall, now a County Council training centre.
