Diocesan support for NHS workers

The Diocese of Carlisle is to sponsor a series of special relaxation and recuperation days for NHS workers.

The events will be held on three separate days at the Diocesan retreat centre, Rydal Hall near Ambleside.

Each day will be lead by Stephen Wright, an honorary fellow of the University of Cumbria, who has a long history of nursing in the NHS and providing staff support.

He is an expert in the field of spirituality and wellbeing and has many years of experience teaching stress reduction, relaxation and resilience techniques.

He is also known to many through his numerous publications and regular contributions to Nursing Standard and other professional journals.

Stephen said: “It can be tough working in the NHS. Whether you are a nurse, doctor or other member of the therapy team, the pressures can seem relentless. We can be so busy meeting the needs of others we can sometimes forget to meet our own.

“In 40 years experience in nursing I have never seen before the level of stress and burn-out being suffered by those in the caring profession at all levels.

“This is an opportunity for NHS workers to come and enjoy a time-out day in the beautiful and peaceful surroundings of Rydal Hall. They will have the chance to taken care of and learn some gentle skills for relaxation and resilience.”

The time-out days are open to all NHS staff in Cumbria, but would be especially beneficial to those currently feeling particularly stretched and in need of some assistance in stress reduction and management.

Places are limited to 20 each day.

The Bishop of Carlisle, the Rt Rev James Newcome, is the Church of England’s lead bishop on healthcare.

He said: “As a Church we are glad to support the NHS in any way we can, and greatly value its contribution to the life and health of our society.

“This initiative provides a welcome opportunity for Carlisle Diocese to show its appreciation of healthcare workers in a tangible – and hopefully fruitful – way.”

The relaxation and recuperation days will be held on March 26, April 16 and June 13 from 9.30am to 4.30pm.

The cost per day is £25 including refreshments and lunch. It is sponsored by the Diocese of Carlisle as a service of support to NHS staff.
