A Lake District vicar is penning his latest book which will be published later this year.

Rev Cameron Butland is the Rector of St Oswald’s Parish Church in Grasmere and is also the Ecumenical Officer for the Diocese of Carlisle.

Cameron is to use three months sabbatical to research and write the work which will look at the influence of the founding saints of the British Isles.

He said: “Anyone who knows me well, knows that this has been a passion of mine. People have been telling me for years that I should write a book on this subject.

“To be honest I can’t wait to get stuck into researching and writing the book. It’s something of a labour of love for me.”

The book currently has the working title Walking Into Celtic Spirituality.

Each of its 20 chapters will look at the influence of the founding saints between the sixth and eighth century.

Cameron, 55 and who was ordained 29 years ago this year, added: “It will focus on saints such as Oswald, Patrick, Cuthbert, Kentigern, Bede and Ninian.

“All of them have had great influence on this region and the Border region in particular. I will be exploring that more within the book.”

Each chapter will also include a walk around an area which is associated with a particular saint.

Permission is being sought to reprint sections of Ordnance Survey maps at the end of each chapter which will allow walkers to follow marked routes.

There will also be excerpts from ancient manuscripts of the founding saints as well as associated prayers.

Grants have already been obtained to help with publication costs, although there is also interest from a professional publisher.

It is expected that Walking Into Celtic Spirituality will be published in September.
