Bishop of Carlisle welcomes election of Pope Francis

The Bishop of Carlisle, the Rt Revd James Newcome, has offered his support to Pope Francis after his election as successor to His Holiness Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.

Bishop James said: “I haven’t met the new Pope, but am hugely encouraged to hear that he is a man of outstanding humility and intelligence.

“He lives simply and is passionate about sharing the gospel, which has to be the main task facing all Christians today.

“With his deep concern for the poor he should be an inspirational world leader, and we must all pray for him as he takes on such huge responsibilities.”
