Church signs up to celebrate

A Cumbrian church is to mark its 75th anniversary with the creation of a special community embroidery.

Members of St Peter’s Kells are to take a sheet around the parish and ask people to sign it.

Those signatures will then be embroidered by members of the church’s Craft and Chat Club to help form a lasting memento of the church’s landmark anniversary.

The Sign Up To Celebrate project will be officially launched from 1pm on Sunday 30 June during a garden party in the grounds of the church.

Rev’d Judy Evans said: “We wanted to do something whereby we were able to go out into the community and ask people to join in our celebrations.

“We want as many people as possible to get involved. This church was built thanks to public subscription so we think it’s fitting that we ask our community to help celebrate with us.”

There are plans to take the sheet to community events over the next twelve months, ahead of the 75th anniversary in September 2014.

Congregation members will take it to a meeting of ecumenical partners in the parish as well as other community events.

The garden party launch will also include performances from Egremont Brass Band, a choir and trumpet players from Monkwray Junior School and a dance display from Kells Infant School pupils.

The completed, signed and embroidered sheet will be put up for display in St Peter’s church.
