Diocese of Carlisle strengthens ties with Norwegian partner

A special agreement has been signed to strengthen ties between the Diocese of Carlisle and the Diocese of Stavanger in Norway.

It came during a four day visit to Cumbria by Bishop Erling Pettersen of Stavanger and members of his Diocesan Council.

For the last 40 years there have been links between the two dioceses, and more recently as part of the Porvoo Agreement which creates ties between English and Nordic Baltic churches.

The agreement will focus on development of youth links between the two dioceses as well as exploring joint pilgrimage and support of parish work.

The Bishop of Carlisle, the Rt Rev’d James Newcome, said: “While there have been very close ties between the two of us for so many years, there has never been a formal written agreement which sets out our joint missional work.

“I’m delighted we now have such a document. It’s one which reflects our shared vision of bringing the Gospel message to as many people as we can so they come to know the love of the Lord.

“It’s exciting to think that that body of work stretches not just across our own county of Cumbria but to our friends through Christ in Norway.

“It’s wonderful to think that that mutual support will continue to grow and has now been officially recognised in our partnership agreement.”

During his stay, Bishop Erling visited Carlisle Cathedral where the agreement was officially signed.

He and his party also visited Rydal Hall, near Ambleside, the Diocese’s Christian retreat centre, as well as joining Bishop James at a teaching day in Barrow and for worship on Sunday at St John’s Keswick.

It was a return visit, made after Bishop James and the Ven George Howe, Bishop’s Chaplain and Chief of Staff, went to Norway in March of this year.

The Diocese of Carlisle has also developed close working links with the Norwegian Missional Society and is supported by NMS in its Deanery Network Youth Church.
