Holy Trinity Church West Seaton

Services are to be officially suspended at a west Cumbrian church later this month.

The congregation of Holy Trinity West Seaton will gather for their Harvest Festival service on Sunday 27 September after which services at the church will be suspended in line with the Church of England’s Canon B 14A.

It follows a decision by Northside Parochial Church Council to close the building.

The Rev’d Ian Grainger, vicar of Camerton, Seaton and West Seaton, said: “Understandably this has been a difficult decision for the PCC to reach but it is one which has had to be made due to a number of important factors.

“The heating system no longer works effectively and to repair or replace this would cost tens of thousands of pounds. The congregation numbers have continued to fall, meaning that people decided they could no longer continue to keep a building of this size running.”

The congregation was first spoken to about the long term future of the building in December 2012.

Throughout the consultation, congregation members have been offered support by the Diocese of Carlisle as they explored new churches in which to worship.

The Church Commissioners have now opened a statutory notice period before any potential closure of the church.
