Diocese’s new offices in Penrith are officially opened and blessed

The new offices of the Diocese of Carlisle –the Church of England in Cumbria – have been officially opened and blessed today (Wednesday 8 June, 2016).

Bishop James cuts the ribbon at the opening ceremony of Church House in PenrithThe Bishop of Carlisle, the Rt Rev’d James Newcome, was joined by staff, invited guests, and ecumenical leaders for a ribbon cutting ceremony outside the building on the town’s Friargate.

Bishop James told those gathered: “It’s my great joy to be here with you at the opening of this new office. To my knowledge discussions about a move to Penrith have been going on for at least ten years, if not more.

“It’s great for us to be based here in Penrith on a number of levels. There’s greater accessibility to the whole of the rest of the diocese. It was wonderful to have had an office in Carlisle but those people travelling from the south of the county were faced with much longer journeys.

“It’s also wonderful for people to now be working in such lovely open plan offices. The kind of integration that enables is very much in tune with our God for All strategy of people collaborating, working together and sharing resources.

“And a third reason why it’s good for us to be based here is that, as a diocese, we already owned the building. It’s made a wonderful use of a resource which was already ours.”

The move follows a decision taken last July by the trustees of the Carlisle Diocesan Board of Finance (DBF) to move from the diocese’s previous office on West Walls in Carlisle to Penrith.

Work to upgrade the Penrith building began at the start of the year, with the office accommodating all diocesan departments including finance, property, education, training, HR, communications, the Lancashire and Cumbria Theological Partnership/Cumbria Christian Learning, The Good Shepherd Multi Academy Trust and the God for All Reach team.

Bishop James led a prayer at the end of the opening ceremony.

He prayed: “We thank you, Lord, for Church House, for this building and for the way in which it has been restored and renovated and for all those who have worked so hard to make this move happen.

“We thank you for our particular roles and the way in which we are able to work together, for our complementary gifts and the way in which, as members of one body, we can work to your glory.”

The new address for the Diocese of Carlisle’s administrative offices is:
