Carlisle Cathedral appoints new Residentiary Canon

The Bishop of Carlisle has appointed the Rev’d Peter Clement, Vocations Development Officer and Diocesan Director of Ordinands, as a Residentiary Canon of the Cathedral.

Peter served in the Dioceses of Chester, Manchester, St Edmundsbury and Ipswich, Bradford and Ripon and Leeds before being appointed to his present post in 2015.

The Vocations Development Officer and Director of Ordinands post is seen to be a full time appointment. Peter will continue to exercise this ministry based from the Diocese’s head office in Penrith where he will also continue to live.

He said: “I am delighted to be appointed a Residentiary Canon of the Cathedral. I see this as a wonderful opportunity to continue to strengthen the existing ties which exist between the Cathedral and the Diocese as we move forward together for God’s greater glory in our Cathedral city and Cumbria as a whole.

“It is an exciting time to take up this role as the Cathedral looks to move forward with its multi-million pound heritage, teaching and learning centre in its Fratry building. I look forward to supporting the Dean and the whole Cathedral Chapter as they move forward with this and other ambitious projects over the coming years.”

As a Residentiary Canon, Peter will become a member of the Cathedral Chapter which directs and oversees the whole life of the Cathedral and, with advice from the Cathedral Council and the College of Canons, shapes the mission strategy for the Cathedral. Peter will also take a regular part in leading worship at the Cathedral.

The Dean of Carlisle, the Very Rev’d Mark Boyling said: “ The Cathedral Chapter look forward very much to welcoming Peter to be part of the strategic work of the Chapter and to take part in the worship which is at the heart of the Cathedral’s life.”

Peter will be collated and installed on Sunday 12 February, 2017, at 3pm. All are very welcome to attend this service.
