Opera at St Cuthbert's Church, Bewcastle

St. Cuthbert’s Church, Bewcastle

This is as much an invitation as unashamedly a request for help. Our much loved and historic little church at Bewcastle, (built some thirteen hundred years ago on the site of a Roman Fort and guardian of the famous Bewcastle Cross) needs to keep the fabric watertight and to install a new heating system to keep all our visitors and (small) congregation reasonably warm.

Read on to find out more.

On Friday 13 July at 7.00 pm come and be serenaded by the lead mezzo soprano of Regents Opera who will perform some of operas’ greatest hits for an hour. These will be tunes you know well and hum along to, (in the car or the bath) sung given a consummate professional, Annabella Ellis who is appearing the next day at Kirklinton Hall with the full Regents Opera company in the Barber of Seville. David Eaton, the company’s musical director will accompany her.

It will begin at 7 pm on the 13th of July and, depending on the number of encores, end about one and a half hours later. There is also (for those who would enjoy such things) an invitation to enjoy bubbles with the bishop - a drink beforehand from 6.30 pm with Felicity-Anne and John Richardson at the Old Rectory next door.

Tickets for the concert are £10; the pre-prandial glass of bubbles (complete with nibbles) at the Old Rectory an extra £5.

It is easy to book your tickets – just call Allison Roberts, Church Treasurer, on 016977 48311 (email
