A Christian charity which supports people combating isolation, loneliness and mental health issues has distributed special Christmas gift bags.

RESTORE builds community for those who would not normally go to church and operates from its city centre headquarters and warehouse in Carlisle, sourcing and recycling pre-owned items for sale in their five shops.

The charity also supports people who may otherwise struggle to socialise through its Community Shed Project, helping clients develop woodworking skills.

And now it has handed out more than 30 special Christmas gift bags to those who may find the festive period difficult.

The Rev Chris Harwood, RESTORE chaplain and pioneer enabler, explained: “We know that there will be some people who will not find Christmas an easy time.

“This is just a simple way in which we can let them know that people are thinking of them and we can encourage them to make contact with us in the New Year.”

The team has worked alongside Health and Wellbeing Team members from Cumbria County Council to identify recipients, with gift bags also being donated to people who live in Carlisle’s John Street hostel.

The bags include a mug, hot chocolate, chocolate bars, wooden lollipop sticks, glue and instructions explaining how recipients can make a ‘pallet coaster’.

“There will be some people who may otherwise not get any gifts at Christmas, so hopefully this will help,” Chris added. “Our hope is that we may see them come along to RESTORE in person as a result to enjoy a cuppa with us.”

Meanwhile, starting in January, the charity is to launch new drop-in spaces at its warehouse on Shaddongate in Carlisle and at their Petteril Bank shop, offering free refreshments, craft activities and a chance to chat. The warehouse will be open on Tuesdays from 10am to 1pm and Fridays 1pm to 3pm. The Petteril Bank shop will open on Tuesdays and Fridays.
