Statement - South Lakes Islamic Centre
We are aware of concerns and protests around the development of the South Lakes Islamic Centre in Furness and recognise that these touch on deep questions about identity, faith, and our common life.
Cumbria is home to people of many backgrounds who contribute richly to our shared life and we celebrate this. Our Christian story teaches that strength is shown not in dominance but in service, not in fear but in love. We seek a kingdom whose character is shaped by its king, Jesus Christ, who teaches us how to love, how to serve and who calls us to work together for a world where there is justice and peace for all. We ask all who care about the moral and spiritual future of our country to speak and act with courage, humility, and respect, so that our communities can be places of peace and truth.
A foundational Christian belief is that every person is made in God’s image and therefore has equal worth. As followers of Jesus Christ, we believe we're called by him to a love that refuses hatred, even where convictions diverge sharply. Christianity has given rise to many of the freedoms our society cherishes: freedom of conscience, of speech, and of worship. Those freedoms belong to all.
We affirm therefore the right of every faith community to worship freely and safely. We reject the condemnation and fear of others because of race or faith. At the same time, we affirm that in a free society people will hold differing views - including theologically and culturally - but such views should be expressed with truthfulness and respect, never with intimidation, prejudice or contempt.
We urge everyone, whatever their convictions, to let their words bear the mark of Christ - truth spoken in love, never in hatred or fear, and always honouring and respecting the humanity of those with whom we disagree.
