in Latest NewsCarlisle Cathedral announces Safeguarding Season
Carlisle Cathedral is to run a Safeguarding Season over coming weeks, to further lament, listen and learn from the survivors of abuse.
The Season will begin on Sunday 10 October –nationally designated as Safeguarding Sunday – and will run through to Wednesday 3 November, All Survivors’ Day.
A specially-formed working party has drawn up a series of events and services through which there will be opportunity to reflect on the suffering of survivors and to reach out further to those affected.

in Latest NewsChurch support for climate-crisis pilgrims
Churches across Cumbria are being encouraged to support climate-crisis pilgrims who are journeying to Glasgow ahead of the UN COP26 Conference.
Two Camino to Cop groups (some starting from Bristol, others from London and both converging in Birmingham) are currently making the pilgrimage to Scotland, ahead of the Conference which starts on 31 October. The pilgrimage is initiated by Extinction Rebellion Faith Bridge - an interfaith alliance representing a broad Christian spectrum – with the aim to lobby world leaders about the global climate crisis.

in Latest NewsDistinctive deacons ordination
Five people will be ordained deacon at Carlisle Cathedral on Saturday, adding to a bumper year for ordinands for the Diocese of Carlisle.
In total 13 people will have answered a call to ordained ministry in 2021 with eight others already having been ordained as curates in June.
The Bishop of Carlisle, the Rt Rev James Newcome, will lead the ordination of distinctive deacons this weekend; the ordinands will remain deacons having chosen not to be ordained priest next year.

The Diocese of Carlisle – the Church of England in Cumbria – is partnering with a Christian charity to provide free retreats for people who were frontline carers during the Covid pandemic.
Caring for the Carers is the idea of the Rev Prof Stephen Wright, spiritual director of the Sacred Space Foundation, a non-profit, non-denominational retreat centre and charitable trust located in the Lake District National Park.

in Latest NewsMeet our 2021 ordinands
A service of celebration will see eight curates – a record number in recent years - ordained at Carlisle Cathedral this weekend.
All will be ordained Deacon by the Bishop of Carlisle, the Rt Rev James Newcome. Covid restrictions mean each candidate will be limited to 10 family members and supporters attending on the day.
The service at 2.30pm on Saturday 26 June will also be livestreamed on both the Diocese of Carlisle and Carlisle Cathedral Facebook pages.

in Latest NewsDiocese of Carlisle pilots national church contactless donation scheme
More than 100 churches across the Diocese of Carlisle – the Church of England in Cumbria – are the first to take part in a national pilot scheme to help encourage contactless giving.
The countywide roll-out is the first of three nationally by the Church of England in 2021 and will see 115 contactless payment units offered up to churches across the county. It represents a £1.25 million investment by the national church in enabling people to give digitally in parishes. Read more -

A young married couple has been appointed to two new strategic roles, leading mission and ministry in the Diocese of Carlisle – the Church of England in Cumbria.
The Rev Nicky Smith, 35, and the Rev Andy Smith, 36, have just started in post as the Director of Ministry Development and Growing Younger Enabler, respectively.
