in Latest NewsCumbrian community stalwarts honoured with Maundy money
Two people from the Diocese have received Maundy money in recognition of many years’ Christian service to their local church and communities.
Clifford Simpson and Doreen Hocking joined 96 men and women - equal to the age of Her Majesty The Queen – who were presented with the money at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle on Maundy Thursday.
In a first, Prince Charles handed out the Maundy money on behalf of The Queen. In 2020 and 2021, Covid restrictions meant the money could not be handed out in person. Read more -

The Bishop of Carlisle calls for us to refocus on the hope of a Risen Jesus this Easter, as the world contends with the challenges of war, Covid and financial insecurity.
The Rt Rev James Newcome was filmed in the gardens of his home in Keswick and reflects upon the light of the Risen Jesus which overcame the darkness of the Crucifixion.

in Latest NewsNew Director of Education appointed to support church schools
The Diocese of Carlisle – the Church of England in Cumbria – has appointed a new Director of Education to lead its team supporting 104 church schools across the county.
Charlotte Tudway – the current Deputy Director of Education – will take over the role next month from Vanessa O’Dea, who earlier this year announced she is to move on from the post.
Charlotte said: “I am delighted to have this opportunity to build on the strong relationships we already enjoy with colleagues across Cumbria and beyond.
“I am absolutely committed to supporting our family of schools which have a distinctive character and role at the heart of our communities. These are exciting times in the world of education, full of challenge and opportunity. I am looking forward to playing my part.”

in Latest NewsBishop plants tree for The Queen’s Green Canopy Jubilee Celebrations
The Bishop of Carlisle has planted a tree as part of Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
The Rt Rev James Newcome joined civic guests and pupils from St Herbert’s C of E primary for the planting which took place in the churchyard of Keswick St John, yesterday.
It forms part of The Queen’s Green Canopy initiative, which was launched last year to encourage people ‘to plant a tree for the jubilee’ to mark the 70th anniversary of her accession to the throne. Read more -

The Archbishop of York has today paid tribute to the Cumbrian community spirit during his first visit to the county since enthronement.
Archbishop Stephen Cottrell joined the Bishop of Carlisle, the Rt Rev James Newcome, who is currently completing a Lent walk across the Diocese of Carlisle, with the two meeting a local marathon man fundraiser and spending time with members of West Cumbria Ukrainian Appeal.

The Dean of Carlisle – the Very Rev Mark Boyling – has today announced that he will retire later this year.
He will step down from his role as Dean at the end of September, after 18 years leading the team at Carlisle Cathedral.
During his time in post the Dean has overseen development of the multi-million pound Fratry project – a landmark education, events and hospitality space in the Cathedral precinct – has steered the cathedral through the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic and has helped develop an exciting programme of events as the Cathedral celebrates its 900th anniversary this year.

in Latest NewsArchbishop of York to join Bishop of Carlisle’s Lent Walk
The Archbishop of York will journey alongside the Bishop of Carlisle as part of a Lent Walk which begins next week.
Bishop James is grateful to his Chaplain, Canon Cameron Butland, who has drawn up a 21-day schedule which will see him criss-cross Cumbria to spend time with and draw alongside clergy in the Diocese throughout March.

in Latest NewsWell-respected Cumbrian vicar appointed new job-share Archdeacon
A well-respected vicar in the Diocese of Carlisle – the Church of England in Cumbria – has been appointed Archdeacon of West Cumberland as part of a job-sharing arrangement.
The Ven Stewart Fyfe is sharing the role with the Ven Richard Pratt, who will retain the Archdeacon’s title, but will now be serving as an Associate Archdeacon.
The two will also jointly lead a New Start Team focussing on the support of parishes in west Cumbria which are currently without a member of clergy. Richard will serve as Associate Priest in the Benefice of Maryport, Netherton, Flimby and Broughton Moor, and Stewart will be supporting the parishes of Aspatria, Hayton and Gilcrux in the near future.

In his message, filmed at Bishop’s House in Keswick, the Rt Rev James Newcome draws on the Queen’s strong spirituality and faith and the tremendous service she has offered during her reign.

A registered social worker – with more than 20 years’ experience in children’s services – has been appointed the new chair of the Diocesan Safeguarding Advisory Panel.
Carol Holt comes to the position having worked for Cumbria County Council for 16 years in children’s services, both as a manager and as a practitioner, undertaking direct work with children and families.
She brings to the diocesan role particular knowledge in multi-agency safeguarding processes, having worked extensively with other partners to both challenge practice and improve services.
