  • Archbishop of York to join Bishop of Carlisle’s Lent Walk

    The Archbishop of York will journey alongside the Bishop of Carlisle as part of a Lent Walk which begins next week.

    Bishop James is grateful to his Chaplain, Canon Cameron Butland, who has drawn up a 21-day schedule which will see him criss-cross Cumbria to spend time with and draw alongside clergy in the Diocese throughout March.

  • Well-respected Cumbrian vicar appointed new job-share Archdeacon

    A well-respected vicar in the Diocese of Carlisle – the Church of England in Cumbria – has been appointed Archdeacon of West Cumberland as part of a job-sharing arrangement.

    The Ven Stewart Fyfe is sharing the role with the Ven Richard Pratt, who will retain the Archdeacon’s title, but will now be serving as an Associate Archdeacon.

    The two will also jointly lead a New Start Team focussing on the support of parishes in west Cumbria which are currently without a member of clergy. Richard will serve as Associate Priest in the Benefice of Maryport, Netherton, Flimby and Broughton Moor, and Stewart will be supporting the parishes of Aspatria, Hayton and Gilcrux in the near future.

  • Bishop James’ tribute on the Queen’s 70th accession anniversary

    The Bishop of Carlisle has filmed a special message of thanksgiving for Her Majesty The Queen as she marks the 70th anniversary of her accession to the throne.

    In his message, filmed at Bishop’s House in Keswick, the Rt Rev James Newcome draws on the Queen’s strong spirituality and faith and the tremendous service she has offered during her reign.

  • New Diocesan Safeguarding Panel chair appointed

    A registered social worker – with more than 20 years’ experience in children’s services – has been appointed the new chair of the Diocesan Safeguarding Advisory Panel.

    Carol Holt comes to the position having worked for Cumbria County Council for 16 years in children’s services, both as a manager and as a practitioner, undertaking direct work with children and families.

    She brings to the diocesan role particular knowledge in multi-agency safeguarding processes, having worked extensively with other partners to both challenge practice and improve services.

  • Diocesan Director of Education to step down from role

    The Director of Education for the Diocese of Carlisle – the Church of England in Cumbria – has announced she is to leave her role.

    Vanessa O’Dea joined the Diocese in January 2020 after more than 14 years teaching religious education, latterly at St Teresa’s School in Surrey, where she was also Head of Boarding. Read more

  • Carl Mimmack - A Tribute

    It is with profound sadness that the Diocese of Carlisle has learned of the death of Carl Mimmack, a Network Youth Church leader in the Penrith area.
     
    Carl joined the Diocese in 2011, starting Ignite Penrith and five years later had secured a new town centre base at which young people could meet, The Gathering.
     
    He was instrumental in Ignite Penrith attaining charitable status, helping secure a long-term future for The Gathering, and continued to work tirelessly alongside dozens of young people as they explored their faith journeys. Read more

  • Hundreds set to attend Barrow Raiders Carol Service

    Hundreds of people are set to head for the Barrow Raiders rugby league stadium for a huge outdoors community carols service on Friday (17 December).

    Churches across the town’s mission community – which support each other missionally - have joined forces with the club to organise the free event at the Craven Park ground, with gates due to open at 5pm for a 6.30pm start.

  • Renewed commitment made to Cumbrian churches working together

    Cumbrian church leaders have reaffirmed their commitment to continued ecumenical working during a special Advent Sunday service.

    Ten years after Cumbria became England’s first ecumenical county, the Service of Reaffirmation at Keswick Methodist Church saw denominational leaders sign or commit to a Declaration of Covenanted Partnership and a Declaration of Companionship.

    Heavy snow and dangerous road conditions in some parts of the county meant that, unfortunately, not all attendees could make it to the service, which came a decade after partner and companion denominations first signed a Declaration of Intent at Carlisle Cathedral.

  • Hundreds of Advent calendars to be shared across the county

    Hundreds of special Advent calendars are to be shared by Network Youth Churches with young people across the county.

    Five hundred calendars – made up of individual cards for each day of Advent – have been printed for distribution among those who regularly attend NYC and young people who they also draw alongside in the community.

    The idea for the Advent calendars was first introduced by the leadership team of Carlisle Network Youth Church, three years ago.
