Living Together · Thursday 15 October 2026
Week 1
The two talks from our first Thursday evening of Living Together, for course participants to watch again or catch up on anything missed.
Living Together is about the church: why Jesus called people together, and what that means for how we live and worship. Raewynne Whiteley led the evening. The group conversations weren't recorded, but each talk ends with the questions that were set for them, so you can pick them up on your own or with others.

Raewynne begins Living Together by asking what the church is. She looks at the Greek word ecclesia, a gathering of people who are called out, and at what the church is for: worship, discipleship and mission. She introduces the five marks of mission.
She then looks at the pictures of the church in scripture, from the body of Christ and the bride to salt and light and living stones, and at how the Bible can be used like a map or like a compass. The talk ends with the questions for your conversation groups: which images you came up with, and the strengths and weaknesses of each.
Raewynne turns to tradition, starting with the words of the Creed: one, holy, catholic and apostolic. She looks at the Thirty-Nine Articles, at why the images of the church we like say something about us, and at the tensions churches have to hold together, such as word and sacrament, evangelism and social action, and a parish church or a gathered one.
She traces how the answer to “who belongs?” has changed from the early church to today. The talk closes with a question for your groups: who belongs at your church, and where do you draw the boundaries?
