Profile
The Deanery of Workington, which came into being in April 2026, serves the coastal town of Workington and surrounding communities in western Cumbria, an area known for its strong industrial heritage, maritime connections, farming communities, and proximity to the western edge of the Lake District.
The deanery encompasses a mixture of urban, suburban, and rural parishes. Its churches work together in worship, evangelism, pastoral care, community outreach, and discipleship, seeking to share the Christian faith while responding to local social and economic challenges. The area includes communities that have experienced industrial decline and deprivation, alongside villages with strong family and community networks.
A central feature of ministry in the deanery is the Workington Mission Community, which encourages churches to collaborate in mission and service across parish boundaries. The deanery is made up of the Benefice of Workington (St Michael’s and St John’s), The Benefice of Camerton and Seaton with West Seaton (St Paul, Seaton and St Peter, Camerton), The Benefice of Harrington and Distington (St Mary, Harrington and Holy Spirit, Distington), and The Parish of St Mary, Westfield, all of which, alongside partner denominations in the Workington Mission Community, play important roles in worship, community engagement, and pastoral ministry.
The deanery as a place of great diversity—from town centres and housing estates to villages, farms, factories, and sporting traditions. The people of the area are often characterised by resilience, practical generosity, loyalty to family, and a willingness to support one another in times of need.
Deanery Prayer
Gracious God,
we pray for the Deanery of Workington.
Bless all who worship, serve, and witness in its churches and communities.
Strengthen them in faith, unite them in love, and guide them by your Holy Spirit.
Give wisdom to their leaders, courage in mission, and compassion in service,
that they may share the hope of Christ with all people.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
